Our Origins

Established in 1888
St. John's Eagle Lake Church was built by parishioners on an acre of land given by Mr. Walter Joy, a neighboring farmer. The land was to be used for the building of a church and cemetery. Construction began in April 1888, spearheaded by several local men including Thomas Quirt, Arthur Smyth, John Ardiel and John Rolston. The cemetery was deeded to Machar Township in 1994.
Mr. George Gander, the first parish priest who served 1887-1899, conducted the first service on July 22, 1888. St. John's was consecrated on May 16, 1966 by the Right Reverend William L. Wright, Bishop of Algoma.
St. John's remains as the only pioneer church in Machar Township, and one of the oldest functioning buildings in the township.
